The song was written by Oscar Hammerstein (w) and Jerome Kern (m) back in 1937. It was first heard in the movie musical "High, Wide, and Handsome" when Irene Dunne sang it. The first hit records of the tune were by Bing Crosby (Decca) and Ozzie Nelson, vocals by Harriet Hilliard (Bluebird)

I agree. This a marvelously subtle song. So romantic. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear Ms. Lee sing it.

A terrific Nelson Riddle arrangement. This was conducted by Frank Sinatra for the album.

beautiful song...very melancholy.I just lost my husband... a very gentle man, who fits into this song very well. Of course, who could sing it better than Peggy Lee.

Thank you very much for posting this. After 36 years on our hill here in Chadds Ford, PA, we are empty nesters, with grandchildren. We await another winter and sledding down the hill with the 5 year old. Smiles to all.

Thanks for posting this nostalgic clip. My parents married the year this song was wriiten, 1937, it was always one of their favourite melodies. My father died in 1983 and mum in 2004 - two lovely people much missed. Now I am just retired, child flown the nest abroad, and we are looking for "a place on the hill". The lyrics of this song show such a wonderful insight for the wheel of time and the effect it has on us all.
