I have read here and there, that caomposers left room for improvising during the days of Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. However, I do not think that I have ever heard a philharmonic DARE to improvise. Perhaps, small variations here and there, barely noticed by most of us. I am glad jazz musicians are doing just that.
